Root Canals

Does your tooth hurt?

A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to treat a tooth that has become infected or inflamed at the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels). The pulp can become infected or inflamed due to a variety of reasons, such as a deep cavity, a crack in the tooth, or injury to the tooth.

During a root canal, the dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding area with an anesthetic. Then, they will make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using small instruments, they will remove the infected or inflamed pulp, thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth, and shape the canals (the small, thin channels that run from the pulp chamber to the tip of the tooth’s root).

After the canals are cleaned and shaped, the dentist will fill them with a rubbery material called gutta-percha. The opening in the tooth is then sealed with a filling or a crown.

Root canal is a common procedure and is done to save the tooth, rather than extracting it. It is done to alleviate pain and prevent further infection or inflammation.

It is important to get a root canal done as soon as possible if you are experiencing pain or other symptoms of an infected or inflamed pulp. Ignoring the issue can lead to severe pain, abscesses, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.
