Are restless nights and daytime fatigue plaguing your life? You’re not alone. Sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder, affects millions worldwide, disrupting sleep patterns and posing serious health risks if left untreated. Fortunately, we offer effective solutions to combat sleep apnea and restore peaceful slumber.

How Fridman Family Dental Care Can Help

Our office is not just for routine cleanings and fillings; it’s also a valuable resource for addressing sleep apnea. We’re well-equipped to diagnose and treat certain types of sleep apnea, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is characterized by physical obstruction of the airway.

Custom Oral Appliances

One of the primary solutions we offer for managing sleep apnea is custom oral appliances. These devices, also known as mandibular advancement devices (MADs) or mandibular repositioning appliances (MRAs), are custom-fitted to your mouth to help keep your airway open during sleep. By gently shifting the position of your jaw forward, oral appliances prevent the collapse of soft tissues at the back of the throat, reducing snoring and breathing interruptions. Unlike cumbersome CPAP machines, oral appliances are comfortable, portable, and easy to use, making them an attractive option for many individuals seeking relief from sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. These interruptions can last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more, and can occur 30 or more times per hour. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which occurs when the airway becomes blocked, and central sleep apnea (CSA), which occurs when the brain doesn’t send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, gasping or choking during sleep, and excessive daytime fatigue.

Treatment for sleep apnea depends on the severity of the condition and the type of sleep apnea. Some common treatment options include:

  1. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which uses a mask worn over the nose or mouth to deliver pressurized air to keep the airway open.

  2. Oral appliances, which are worn in the mouth like a mouthguard to help reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open.

  3. Lifestyle changes such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol and sedatives, and sleeping on your side.

  4. Surgery to remove excess tissue from the airway or to repair structural abnormalities that are blocking the airway.

  5. Behavioral therapy such as biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques to improve breathing and reduce stress and anxiety.

It is important to consult a doctor if you suspect you have sleep apnea, as it can have serious health consequences if left untreated, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and even death.
